Constella Group’s Mental Health and Substance Use Program Director Contributes to SAMHSA’s Mental Health, United States

Publication Seeks to Improve Mental Health Policies and Practices

Durham, N.C., March 14, 2007— Constella Group, a global professional health services company, announced today that its Director of Mental Health and Substance Use Programs, Dr. Ron Manderscheid, is a contributing author and principal editor for "Mental Health, United States, 2004." The publication is the latest in a biennial series released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to analyze the current progress and future direction of U.S. policies and practices in the area of mental health.

"Mental Health, United States, 2004" identifies key issues to address in both public and private sectors to advance care for mental health consumers and covers topics such as measures to improve quality, mental health care in primary care settings, and national service statistics.

Dr. Manderscheid has been principal editor for "Mental Health, United States" for the last nine editions, spanning nearly 20 years.

"I am always honored to be a part of this collaborative publication and am extremely proud of the progress it has made since its inception in 1983 ," said Dr. Manderscheid. "It has evolved from a purely statistical work, to a policy-based publication, which not only includes statistical data, but also interprets that data and defines the resulting implications, making it more useful and applicable for those in the field."

Dr. Manderscheid contributed to "Mental Health, United States" while serving in numerous leadership roles at SAMHSA, before retiring from federal service in 2005.

With Constella, Dr. Manderscheid is continuing to address mental health and substance use policies by publishing white papers and other written works, by convening focus groups, and by leading program initiatives to support the mental health and substance use service communities and the people they serve.

"Through my work at Constella, I can now impact mental health and substance use from the role of a service provider, which ultimately brings me even closer to the people affected by health policies," said Dr. Manderscheid. "Publications like ‘Mental Health, United States' take on new meaning as I consider how our company's expertise in areas like information technology, health research, and communications can be applied to help reverse some of the negative trends and further initiatives toward achieving recovery for mental health and substance use consumers."

Mental Health, United States, 2004," is now available in both hard copy and electronic versions. For more information about the publication, and how to obtain a copy, visit SAMHSA's National Mental Health Information Center website at www.mentalhealth.samhsa.gov.
