The POLICY Project works with civil society and government partners in developing countries to create enabling policy environments for high quality, sustainable HIV/AIDS, family planning, reproductive health, and safe motherhood programs and services. The highly competitive Truman Award is presented to an individual between 18 and 30 who has spent time in a development-related working environment and who has demonstrated the strong characteristics of leadership, creativity and dedication. The Society for International Development affirmed that, “the selected winner will recognize international development as a means of service to those who are most in need, and will work toward sustainable, people-centered development initiatives.” Jeffrey Jordan, Chief Operating Officer of Futures Group, commented, “I am proud to congratulate one of our brightest young professionals, Nadia Carvalho, on being the very deserving recipient of the Truman Award of Leadership and Innovation by Young Professionals in International Development. It speaks volumes of Nadia’s achievements within the POLICY Project, as well as her commitment and dedication to improving the well-being of others.” The Society recognized Carvalho for her leadership and management skills, for demonstrating increased levels of responsibility on the Mekong portfolio within Futures Group, and for her commitment to international development. Since Aug. 2004, Carvalho has quickly established herself as an essential part of the Mekong portfolio of the POLICY Project. Carvalho actively participates in all aspects of POLICY Project’s management and operations in Vietnam, China, and the Mekong Region, including work with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat based in Jakarta, Indonesia. “The Mekong region is a fertile environment for the spread of HIV,” explained Carvalho. “Injecting drug use, mobility within and between countries, the sex industry, discrimination against vulnerable populations, and poverty in the region suggest the need to develop strategies that address multiple epidemics.” In addition to her work with Futures Group, Carvalho continues her interests in international development through support to a Nepalese orphanage and work with former colleagues in Nepal to establish a permanent and sustainable structure to give children at the orphanage the opportunity for economic gain and higher education. “We are most impressed by (Nadia’s) creativity, initiative, and commitment to international development,” said a member of the selection committee. “Her dedication to the ideals of sustainable development is evident in both her professional and volunteer work.” Editor’s note: A photograph of Nadia Carvalho is available on request.1The Mekong region—that derived its name from the river that runs though it—includes Burma, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, Vietnam, and the southern part of China.
