Press ReleasesPOLICY Project Has Strong Presence at AIDS Conference in AsiaWashington, D.C., June 16, 2005—The POLICY Project will have a strong presence at the Seventh International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP), held in Kobe, Japan, July 1-6, 2005. The theme of the conference is “bridging science and community.” POLICY staff will present findings on important issues in Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal, and India. Its research examines HIV-positive women, access to health services and treatment, policy development, the role of people living with HIV/AIDS, and stigma and discrimination, among other topics. “The ICAAP is a major venue for information sharing on HIV/AIDS in the region,” according to Felicity Young, deputy director of HIV for the POLICY Project. “The breadth of our participation reflects the scope of work we do in Asia. We have five project offices in the region and plan to expand our presence there.” The AIDS epidemic continues to spread in Asia. The number of HIV-positive people there is growing quickly, especially in East Asia. In 2004, according to a UNAIDS report, the number of positive individuals in East Asia rose 44.7% to 1.1 million.
