Press ReleasesNIOSH Awards $23 Million Information Technology Contract to ASIASI To Apply Innovative Technology to Agency’s 21st Century Public Health Agenda DURHAM, N.C., Sept. 25, 2002—The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has awarded Analytical Sciences, Inc. (ASI), a competitive $23 million, seven-year contract to support the institute’s public health initiatives with a wide range of information technology (IT) services and solutions. As the prime contractor, ASI will focus on supporting the NIOSH Information Technology Support (NITS) program into the 21st century and on using advanced technologies to help the federal agency fulfill its vision of ensuring safety and health at work for all people through its research and prevention activities. To support the new NITS contract, ASI has expanded its staff and presence in a new geographic region. The company, which currently employs about 530 people, has opened a new regional office in Morgantown, W.Va. and employed about 30 new technical personnel. The new staff works at the Morgantown office and at NIOSH research facilities, both in Morgantown and in Cincinnati. Company officials expect to increase staff in these areas, as well in ASI’s other offices located in Durham, Atlanta, Austin, Texas, and in Bethesda, Silver Spring and Frederick, Md. "We are delighted to be a partner with NIOSH and to play such a key role in helping the nation meet the health and safety needs of its changing workforce," said Chris LeGrand, ASI vice president of operations and chief technology officer. "With this and other contracts, ASI has become as a major IT support player in the federal health research sector. Our key strength is having the corporate experience to provide leading-edge technology solutions from a well-informed, public health research perspective." Under the contract, ASI will provide a broad array of data, information, information technology, and information system support services to NIOSH, including SAS programming, Web development, database management and other scientific and technology services. Through this contractual vehicle, any offices within NIOSH can write task orders requesting IT support services from ASI. "ASI is the perfect company to help NIOSH use key technologies to support its 21st century public health initiatives because we understand NIOSH’s research agenda and its health promotion and injury prevention mission," said ASI Founder, President and CEO Donald A. Holzworth. "Our experience goes far beyond advanced IT support services. We also have a wealth of experience in public health research, which enables us to conceptualize, engineer and support the complex information systems that NIOSH’s research agenda requires." Holzworth added that supporting NIOSH’s strategic IT goals fits squarely within ASI’s corporate vision of "enhancing human health through innovative science, technology and knowledge solutions." Although by far the largest contract ASI has ever won from NIOSH—and the first to support the agency’s IT enterprise initiatives—it is not ASI’s first work for NIOSH. In previous work for the institute, an ASI statistician was among those awarded the 1999 Alice Hamilton Award for Excellence in Occupational Safety and Health for outstanding publication of research findings. In Dec. of 2000, NIOSH awarded ASI a grant to conduct a nationwide study of the extent of exposure to bloodborne pathogens among non-hospital heath care workers. About ASI Founded in 1983, ASI conducts research and provides technical and professional services to help government and industry clients identify and solve problems affecting human health. In addition to providing information technology services and solutions, the privately owned human health research organization offers expertise in public health research, research administration and science management, health communications, biostatistics and clinical research. ASI serves clients in health care and public health, biodefense, science management and research, and civil government markets.
