Nigeria: Insecticide-Treated Malaria Bed Net Project
Malaria has long been recognized as a major health threat in Nigeria, with
pregnant women and children being particularly vulnerable to the disease.
The use of insecticide-treated bed nets dramatically reduces the risk of
infection as the insecticide kills or repels the vector carrying mosquitoes
that feed during the night.
The overall goal of the insecticide-treated net program is to reduce mortality
rates in pregnant women and in children under the age of five years old by
raising awareness of malaria and increasing the demand for and use of insecticides
to treat bed nets.
Constella Futures is using the “3rd Generation” social marketing
approach to encourage a viable commercial market. This involves using donor
funds to support and strengthen the marketing efforts of competing manufacturers
of insecticides and nets. Constella Futures' activities have attracted investment
and commitment from the business sector to develop branded products and establish
sound distribution networks. The competition generated has driven down the
price of insecticide-treated bed net kits, created wider choice for consumers,
and encouraged distributors to make a more assertive effort with their own
marketing strategies.
