Community Participation for Action in the Social Sector (COMPASS)

In Nigeria, as in the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, poor health care and inadequate basic education go hand in hand with high levels of poverty. Despite its rich natural and human resources, the country's social indicators are among the world's worst.

The Community Participation for Action in the Social Sector (COMPASS) project strives to engage local Nigerian communities in building high quality, integrated health and education services. Launched in 2004 in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria, this five-year, USAID-funded project seeks to lay the foundation for sustainable improvements in reproductive health, family planning, child survival, and basic education.

COMPASS is implemented by a consortium of nine partners (five American and four Nigerian) led by Pathfinder International. As one of these partners, Constella Futures carries out two main roles within COMPASS. It develops and reinforces policy and advocacy activities to increase government and popular support, that is, the "enabling environment", for child survival, reproductive health and family planning and basic education services; and directs and implements the monitoring and evaluation functions of the Project.
