TuberculosisRelated Publications | Selected Projects Tuberculosis (TB), an airborne infectious disease that kills approximately 1.7 million people each year, is a disease of poverty with individuals living in poorest communities, such as those in the developing world, being at greater risk of becoming infected. Despite being easily curable, lack of basic health services, poor nutrition, inadequate living conditions, and weak health services to diagnose and treat TB are major factors in its rapid spread. Sub-Saharan Africa bears the brunt of the TB emergency as it is drastically fuelled by the co-existing HIV epidemic. As HIV weakens the immune system there is little resistance to TB infection, resulting in TB being the major case of death among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). As HIV epidemics continue to threaten other regions of the world, so to does the likelihood of increasing numbers of TB cases, potentially overwhelming already weakened health-care systems. Collaborative TB/HIV activities are essential in reducing the burden of TB among PLWHA and vice-versa. Constella Futures brings together our extensive experience of HIV/AIDS initiatives with our work in TB to address the requirements of developing countries to effectively manage and support TB and TB/HIV treatment programs. By strengthening management structures and health information systems, we are contributing to addressing the challenges related to this dual epidemic. Our work has also facilitated the integration of TB and HIV/AIDS advocacy activities, leading to coordinated and more effective policy-making decisions. In Ukraine, under the Health Policy Initiative, Constella Futures is providing technical assistance to the national and selected oblast governments to advance a TB program that aligns with WHO and international standards.
