Maternal and Child HealthDifferences in maternal and child mortality and morbidity rates still represent one of the most significant disparities between developed and developing countries. Complications during pregnancy and childbirth claim the lives of half a million women every year, and countless more suffer from long-term health issues. Most of these occurrences could be prevented given access to quality maternal health interventions. Constella Futures works at the national and local level to improve the health and well-being of women and children in developing countries. Our efforts encompass a wide range of services, including strategic planning and technical support to strengthen the policy environment; building the capacity of civil society to encourage advocacy and community mobilization; research, monitoring and evaluation; and computer modeling for resource allocation. The Maternal Neonatal Program Index (MNPI) measures policy and program inputs and strength of effort for the reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity and closely related neonatal issues. MNPI briefs are currently available for 34 countries. A specific area of focus is Adolescent Reproductive Health (ARH) as Constella Futures recognizes that meeting the needs of youth is critical to the health of future generations. By disseminating relevant information, resources and tools, we aim to create a shared understanding of the important issues concerning ARH. The HIV epidemic is also fuelling the crisis of rapidly increasing numbers of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) around the world. Orphans, vulnerable children and adolescents most in need are often frequently excluded in designing or monitoring responsive strategies on their behalf. Constella Futures has extensive experience in working with multiple sectors and at multiple levels to strengthen and monitor the progress of national responses to orphans and vulnerable children.
