Pharmaceutical Product Development
Steve Smith is responsible for the product
development unit of Constella Group. With staff in the United
States and Europe, this unit provides pharmaceutical, biotechnology,
and device companies with all the services required to take
a new pharmaceutical product from concept to market. Smith
is responsible for driving the unit's direction and growth,
its revenue and earnings, and ensuring successful service
delivery to its customers.
Smith has more than 20 years experience in the pharmaceutical
industry with both large pharmaceutical companies and with
contract research organizations (CROs). He joined Constella
in March 2006 following the acquisition of Origin, the international
CRO he founded with two partners in October 1999.
Smith started his career with Eli Lilly in agrochemical
research and regulatory affairs before moving into clinical
research as a clinical research associate (CRA). He then
moved to Sandoz UK as a CRA and progressed, eventually running
the dermatology and immunology therapeutic group. He then
moved to Sandoz’s headquarters in Basle as group medical
officer for immunology and dermatology, running its worldwide
Phase IIIb/IV programs. In September 1995, Smith moved into
corporate marketing at Sandoz as international product manager
for transplantation. Following the merger of Sandoz and
Ciba Geigy to form Novartis, Smith moved back to the UK
to take a position as Director of Clinical Operations for
Pharmakopius, a CRO. In October 1999, left to set up his
own CRO with two colleagues, where he built Origin into
a company with more than 100 people in UK , France, Germany,
and the United States.
Smith holds a degree in agricultural botany and an MBA from
Henley Management College.
